State Inspection Revealed Hidden Danger

Video: This Hyundai Elantra arrived for a state inspection.  When this front wheel was randomly pulled as part of the routine check, we found a dangerous brake condition known as shim migration.  The holding tabs of the shim (which rests on top of the brake pad to suppress brake squeal) had failed, allowing it to migrate over into the brake rotor hat and saw halfway through the rotor at this point. Inspection of the other side revealed the start of the same situation. Replacement of the rotors and brake shims restored a safe operating condition.  The brake pads were fairly new and could be reused.
